Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the old Kingdom of Kandy's royal palace complex, which also houses the relic of the Buddha's tooth. The temple, which is adored by Buddhists all around the world, is also significant in terms of culture. The building is designed in a distinctive Kandyan architectural style, using components from the "Dalada Mandira" shrines that historically housed the Sacred Tooth Relic in several kingdoms.

Dalada Perahera, famously known as the Kandy Esala Perahera, held in the month of Esala (July) annually, is considered as the epitome of the country's Buddhist celebrations and is blessed with divinity. It is truly a captivating experience full of rich tradition and vibrant with colour.

The poojas and rituals dedicated to Lord Buddha that were performed by Ananda Thero back then are now performed as Theva (Daily Services) by the Maha Nayaka Theros of Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters, who are followed by the living Maha Sanga of those temples who are dedicated to perform the rituals.

Daily Services

The "Nanumura" ceremony or "Nanumura Mangallaya" takes place every Wednesday. Two women known as "Alatti Amma" performs the service. During the ceremony "Kavikara Maduwa", or the Chamber of Versifiers, will recite poems praising Lord Buddha. A special fragrant herbal mixture is given among the waiting followers. Finally, as is customary, flowers are placed on the Relic casket.
